Vikings coast at home, another tough road league test on tap

Was that the Posen boys’ basketball putting a whooping on their guests Monday evening on the home floor? Does Elmer Fudd have trouble with his ?Rs?? It’s twue. It probably wasn’t the best night for Atlanta to be Posen’s next opponent as the Vikings were coming off their worst loss of the season. Posen’s defense held the Huskies to eight points in the first half, on their way to an easy 74-28 victory.

?When we went down to Hale a lot of things went wrong,? said head coach Steve Hentkowski of 59-24 loss. ?One of them was the defensive intensity was not there.? THE COACH believes his team stepped up their defensive play and the numbers back that up as Atlanta managed only five points in the first quarter and three in the second. Four Vikings scored in double figures, led by David Kerr with 20 points. Fellow sophomore Jerome Ciarkowski had 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Justin LaPointe and Shane Hentkowski both had 11 apiece. Hentkowski added 12 boards.

?Give credit to Atlanta, they didn?t quit,? said Hentkowski. ?They kept with it. I thought our offense executed fairly well. I wasn?t too happy with some of our transition. I think we could have pushed the ball a little harder at times.? The Vikings were about three minutes from skunking Atlanta in the second quarter, before Lucas Eising made a free throw. The only field goal in the quarter came a minute before halftime by

the same player. The score at the break was 39-8. The win put the red and white back above the .500 mark with an overall mark of 4-3. They are 3-3 in the North Star League.

Up next will be Hillman, who at last check, was undefeated. THE JUNIOR varsity continues its near season-long roll with their sixth-straight win at the expense of Atlanta, 58-49. Their only loss came in game No. 1 against Rogers City. The icing on the cake is Tyler Kuffel is back from a knee injury and led the Vikings in both of their last outings. He had 17 points and 12 boards against Atlanta and 14 in a 41-26 win against Hale.

Coach Tim Romel said the win at Hale was the best defensive performance so far. Zach Idalski (15 rebounds) and Lucas Litwinski both had nine apiece against Atlanta, while Idalski and Kohl Stowe both had eight each against Hale. The J.V. is 5-0 in the conference.
