Huron boys rebound for win in Alcona

The Huron boys (7-6) got back on the winning track in a wild 58-51 win at Alcona Tuesday. Coach Jesse Streich?s team came back from a 30-27 halftime deficit to pull the game out in exciting fashion. A series of fouls and technical fouls sent Huron senior guard Chris Vogelheim to the free-throw line six times in the final 30 seconds. He made all six to seal the win for the visitors. Eric Meharg led the Hurons with 23 points, while adding 10 steals, eight assists and five rebounds. Senior center Evan Wagner scored 17 points while snaring seven rebounds. Vogelheim scored 14 points in the Huron win.

Rogers City went to the line 40 times in a foul-filled game, hitting 23. Alcona hit just 11-of-25 from the free-throw line. LAST FRIDAY the Hurons let one slip away as St. Ignace stole a 67-64 win over Rogers City. The Hurons played three great quarters of basketball, leading 52-38 heading into the last quarter. ?We missed some easy shots and free throws,? Streich said of his team?s play in the fourth quarter.

Meharg scored a career-high 34 points while tallying eight steals, four rebounds and four assists. Wagner had 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. THE JUNIOR varsity Hurons scored a 58-51 win over St. Ignace last Friday. Rogers City trailed 30-27 at halftime and 45-39 after three quarters, but came back strong in the fourth quarter.

Austin Brege, playing his last junior varsity game before being called up to varsity for the Alcona game, scored 17 points. Devin Hilla added 14 and Chase Grulke scored nine. In Alcona, the team came out on the short end of a 59-44 score. Alcona jumped out to a 15-6 lead in the first quarter and never trailed in the game. Chris Peacock scored 12 points while Hilla added nine in the game. The teams play in Newberry Friday and host Inland Lakes Monday. The junior varsity game begins at 6 p.m. each day with the varsity following.
