Hurons playing well with quarter of the season left

With five regular-season games remaining, the Huron boys’ basketball team seems to be hitting its stride. On Monday, head coach Jesse Streich’s squad thrashed visiting Inland Lakes (IL) 68-43, in a game that wasn?t even that close. The Hurons were up by as many as 35 in the fourth quarter before a late surge by the Bulldogs. Rogers City (RC) has won three straight and are 9-6. The streak could be longer if they hadn?t lost close ones against St. Ignace and Hillman.

Next up is a date against Cheboygan, followed by a trip to Onaway, Wednesday. Streich is pleased the players are buying into the system and getting the job done on the floor. They are playing unselfishly and getting steady scoring from their big man Evan Wagner, who had 14 against IL and Newberry. The Hurons took control of Monday?s game in a 20-11 first quarter, but boosted the point margin to 25, 42-17 by halftime.

FOLLOWING CHRIS VOGELHEIM’S three-pointer and jumper at the two minute mark of the second quarter (33-15), IL scored its final bu

cket of the first half before Rogers City went on a 9-0 run. Involved in the scoring were Wagner with a pair of field goals, a three-pointer by Erik Meharg and a jumper by Chris Waibel. The Hurons extended the run to 15-0 with baskets from Vogelheim and Meharg (48-17) in the third.

The Bulldogs stopped the run, only to have RC start another with Austin Brege, Tim Bober and Andy Grulke doing their part. Even with those scoring fireworks, Jesse Wilbert had the offensive highlight of the night with a buzzer beater just inside the half-court line at the close of the third. The ball went right into the rim.

Vogelheim and Meharg both had 13 each. Against Newberry, the Hurons won 58-36. Meharg finished with 11. THE JUNIOR VARISTY improved their record to 8-5 with a 48-35 win for IL. Devin Hilla led all scorers with 16, Josh Vogelheim had 12 and Chris Peacock put in 10. The Hurons lost to Newberry, 33-32. Peacock had 14 and Hilla eight.
