Lady Hurons suffer 50-25 loss to Sault Ste. Marie

The Huron girls put up a fight but came out on the short end of a 50-25 score last Friday against Sault Ste. Marie. They face a tough test Friday in St. Ignace against the Saints. Rogers City lost 85-29 Dec. 18 to St. Ignace in a game played at Rogers City High School. Although the Hurons lost by 25, coach Emily McLean said the team played much better than they did the first time around, a 60-14 loss at the Soo. ?I told them the only thing that can control the game is the defense. We worked on a lot of things this week in practice and it shows. They really did play great defense,? McLean said.

?THE ONLY thing was with our offense; we were not really executing. Soo was playing tight defense and I was upset that we didn?t do more screen-rolls or give and goes.? The game was part of a varsity doubleheader, which featured an exciting 55-53 win for the Huron varsity boys in the second game (see separate story). McLean?s team went slowly and carefully in the early going, trailing 6-2 with 3:45 left in the first quarter after senior guard Greta Grambau?s jumper. That would be the only Huron bucket of the quarter as Sault Ste. Marie led 12-2 after one.

Jordyn Lamb started the second quarter with a steal, but the Hurons couldn?t convert. Later in the frame, Logan Schuiteman fed Grambau on a give and go then hit a 12-footer of her own as the Hurons cut the lead to 16-7 with 4:30 left in the second quarter. But 14 turnovers in the frame, added to 10 turnovers in the first quarter, helped the Sault to a 24-10 lead at halftime. AFTER HALFTIME, Amanda Lenard got a steal to begin the quarter but again the Hurons turned the ball over on a bad pass to lose momentum. Then an 0-for-9 sho

oting stretch in the third quarter doomed any chances of a Huron comeback.

A pair of baskets by Schuiteman, including a steal, a breakaway layup and a free throw by Shelby Schleben made for a 5-0 Huron run midway through the fourth quarter. Schuiteman and Grambau each scored seven points while Sam Hall had five points. Schuiteman added 11 rebounds while Grambau had three assists and three steals. Rogers City made 8-of-40 from the field. ?The girls played tough. I can?t ask anything more of them,? McLean said. Thursday?s junior varsity game at Sault Ste. Marie was canceled due to bad road conditions.

THIS FRIDAY?S GAME begins a busy stretch for the Hurons. The junior varsity plays Sault Ste. Marie at home Monday, in a makeup contest, then both the varsity and junior varsity team hosts Posen Tuesday, hosts Newberry Friday Feb. 12, and hosts Onaway Feb. 16. ?We are going to have a lot of games without a lot of practices, so they are going to have to be ready for that,? McLean said.
