Nave reaches 1,000 points as regular season comes to an end

Senior point guard Allie Nave became the first Onaway High School girls? basketball player to score 1,000 varsity points in a career as the Cardinals defeated Bellaire last Thursday, 44-36.

Nave, a four-year varsity starter and the program?s all-time leader in points, assists, and steals, reached 1,000 by hitting the first of two free throws with 40 seconds left in the first half. After the game stopped momentarily to honor her achievement, she returned to the line and calmly sank the second free throw to up her career point total to 1,001 and her teams? lead to 15.

The senior scored 11 of her game-high 16 points ? assisting on two other baskets ? as the Cardinals stretched a 9-2 lead after one quarter to 28-11 at the half.

The Eagles, who defeated Onaway earlier in the season, trimmed the deficit to 32-27 by the end of the third period, and to 32-29 with a bucket to open period four. Senior Amanda Pomranke, a three-year varsity starter, buried a three to double that lead to six, and Raquel Moran scored off the glass to make it eight. Bellaire got no closer than five the rest of the way.

Senior Payton Lupu, who leads the Cards in rebounds with more than 10 per game, grabbed a career-high 18 boards, to go with 12 points, in the win. Sherri Smith hit five threes and scored 12 points for the Eagles.

Five days later, the girls? basketball teams wrapped up their regular season at home against Gaylord St. Mary in an emotional game for five seniors playing their final contest in t

he OHS gymnasium. The Cardinal varsity led throughout the first half, but struggled in the third period and lost, 46-38, to see their record fall to 12-8 (9-7 in the Ski Valley Conference).

Onaway jumped out to an early 10-3 lead, and led 10-9 after one period. Neither team led by more than three in period two, and Pomranke drilled a long three at the buzzer to put OHS up 19-18 at the half.

The Cards took their final lead, 22-20, when Lupu scored, was fouled, and hit the free throw. A few minutes later, with her team trailing by four, Lupu repeated that effort to trim the deficit to one, 26-25.

Seven straight Snowbird points put GSM up 33-25, and though Nave hit a pair of foul shots to trim the gap to six heading into period four, Onaway couldn?t get any closer than five the rest of the way. The home game was the last for Nave, who finished with a game-high 15 points.
