Rogers City owns fourth quarter over Posen

Greta Grambau?s 10 fourth quarter points sparked a comeback in Rogers City?s their rivalry game with Posen (9-7, 7-4) Tuesday night. The final score was 53-49. The Hurons (7-8, 1-6) were down by seven points in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter before they took over with a suffocating 17-2 run. Grambau finished with a career-best 24 points, with most off them coming off layups in close, as Rogers City kept beating Posen?s press.

Another difference in the contest was the seven missed free throws by the Vikings in the fourth quarter. They were three-for-10 from the charity stripe in the game. FOLLOWING THE contest, of utmost concerns for fans from both sides was the condition of Viking coach Karl Momrik, who was transported by ambulance to Alpena Regional Medical Center.

According to Posen superintendent Dru Milliron, Momrik was airlifted to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City where he was listed in stable condition Wednesday morning. The Vikings were coming off a tremendous upset last Thursday, downing previously undefeated Arenac Eastern. They seemed to be using some of that momentum into the Rogers City game.

Posen had the lead for nearly all of the first quarter. Anna Couture put in a layup on a nice opening tip play by the Vikings. It wasn?t until the final scoring play of the first quarter did the Hurons finally tie the game at 10. The Hurons started the second with a 6-2 run to build a four-point lead, 16-12. It was six when Logan Schuiteman knocked down a baseline jumper. A few minutes later, she converted on a similar play to give the orange and black an eight-point advantage, 24-16.

Posen scored six straight before halftime, four on jumpers by Korynn Hincka, to cut the lead to three, 26-23 at the break. ?WE PLAYED a great first half,? said Huron coach Emily McLean. Posen had a 14-8 scoring advantage in the third. The Vikes scored most of their points off of offensive rebounds, while the Hurons continued to convert layups off Posen?s press. Lindsay Ponik and Lindsey Bartz made shots to open the fourth and give the Vikings their biggest advantage of the contest, 41-34. ?I told them to get back what we had in the first half, and they did,? said McLean. ?They got a couple of fast breaks, a couple of baskets and stops, and it p

Grambau would score eight straight points to turn the game around. Schuiteman had 14, while Couture had a team-best 13. Hincka had 10. Rogers City lost to St. Ignace in their previous outing, 67-26. Shelby Schleben and Grambau both had six each. Posen shook up the North Star League again with their derailing of 16-0 Arenac, 39-37, last Thursday. The visiting Eagles were ranked fourth in the Associated Press Class D polls heading into the contest (more details in Sportsbeat). Rogers City hosts Newberry Tonight in a game that was moved from Friday, while Posen is at Hale.

IN JUNIOR varsity action, Rogers City (7-6, 1-4) won 36-29. Brooklyn Idalski had 11 for the Hurons, while Nikki LaLonde put in seven. Beverly Bednarski had nine points for Posen (13-2, 8-1). Paige Lewandowski and Ashley Meyers each had six apiece. The Vikings defeated Arenac last Thursday, 43-18. The Hurons lost to St. Ignace 44-36. Idalski had nine and LaLonde had eight. The girls were to take on the Soo Monday, but the game has now been cancelled completely.
