Bruski, Klein to lead PHS class of 2010

by Angie Asam, Staff Writer Valedictorian Luke Bruski and salutatorian Robert Klein lead 14 honor students who are at the top of the Posen High School (PHS) Class of 2010. The honor graduates will lead their class of 24 in commencement exercises on June 4. Bruski (4.00) is the son of James and Lucia Bruski. Luke is a member of the National Honor Society (NHS), Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), Educational Talent Search (ETS), the Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council (NEMYAC), youth group, is a class officer and has participated in basketball and baseball for the Vikings. Bruski earned Student of the Year awards in mathematics, computers, physical education and NHS. He was the captain of the basketball team as well as being named the team?s most valuable defensive player. Bruski has also captained the baseball team and earned all-district, outfielder of the year and academic all-state honors on the diamond. He is also the yearbook editor.

After graduation from PHS in June, Bruski plans to attend the University of Michigan. Klein (3.98) is the son of Robert and Pam Klein. He is the treasurer of the trip club, is a class officer and played three years of basketball for the Vikings. Klein plans to pursue a bachelor?s degree in mechanical engineering at Lake Superior State University after graduation from high school.

Janice Ciarkowski (3.96) is the daughter of David and Grace Ciarkowski. She is vice president of the NHS and the trip club. Ciarkowski is a member of SADD, ETS, NEMYAC, orange team, and youth group. Ciarkowski has played volleyball, basketball and softball for the Vikings. Ciarkowski was the second runner-up in the 2009 Miss Posen pageant. As a softball player Ciarkowski was first-team all-conference in 2008 and honorable mention in 2009. She was second-team all-conference in basketball and academic all-conference as a junior.

Ciarkowksi plans to attend Alpena Community College and Northwood University to study business administration. Cheryl Romel (3.92) is the daughter of Leo and Denyse Romel. She is president of the pep club and the student council and treasurer of the NHS. Romel is a member of ETS, SADD, ski club, trip club, St. Casimir Catholic Church youth group and has played basketball, volleyball and softball for the Vikings.

Romel was named most valuable infielder on the PHS softball team as a sophomore and a junior and won the mathematics award her junior year. She also tutors a sixth-grade student and spends time doing community service projects through NHS. Romel plans to attend Eastern Michigan University in the fall to study social work. Scott Couture (3.87) is the son of Patrick and Donna Couture. He is a member of NHS, ETS, student council, St. Casimir Parish youth group, SADD, orange team and has played football, basketball and baseball for the Vikings.

Couture was all-region, all-district and first-team all-conference on the baseball field as well as being named the most valuable infielder. On the basketball court he has been second-team all-conference and honorable mention in the conference. He was also second-team all-conference in football. He was also the co-captain of the football team as a senior. Couture plans to attend Alpena Community College before transferring to a four-year university to further his education. Emily Kroll (3.83) is the daughter of Gerald Kroll and Joanne Kroll. She is a member of SADD, ski club, trip club, NHS, NEMYAC, St. Casimir Catholic Church youth group, the basketball team and the track team.

Kroll was most improved on the track team and has been named academic all-state in basketball. After graduation in June Kroll plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University to study in their premedical program. Julia Lewandowski (3.59) is the daughter of Mark and Denise Lewandowski. She is a member of NHS, orange team, ETS, student council, trip club, SADD, dance, piano and Axis youth group. Lewandowski has also participated in volleyball, basketball, softball and track for the Vikings.

Lewandowski was Miss Presque Isle County Fair in 2007 and Miss Posen in 2009. She was a state qualifier for track in 2009, was co-captain of the varsity basketball team and is a member of the Dance Centre 2009 competitive dance team. After graduating from high school Lewandowski hopes to assist youth with special needs as she studies either occupational therapy or special education. She hopes to start studying at Alpena Community College and then continue at a university. Elysha Jodoin-Peters (3.46) is the daughter of Greg Peters and the late June Jodoin. She is a member of ETS, SADD, orange team, yearbook and newspaper, cheerleading and track. She is also the vice president of the ski club. Peters plans to attend Northern Michigan University to study either elementary education or graphic communications in the fall.

Nathan Street (3.36) is the son of Michael and Brenda Street. He is a member of the trip club, SADD, ETS, yearbook and the ski club. He has participated in football and basketball for the Vikings. He was co-captain of the football team as a senior. Street was the most improved member of the football team in 2008, was second-team all-conference in 2009 and was the defensive player of the year in 2009 and 2010. After graduation Street plans to attend a four-year college and get a degree in mechanical engineering. Shauna Zielaskowski (3.33) is the daughter of Robert and Laurie Zielaskowski. She is a member of the pep club, the trip club, SADD, ETS, yearbook and the orange team. She serves as treasurer of the pep club. After graduating from PHS in June, Zielaskowski plans to attend Alpena Community College.

Selena R. Smolinski (3.29) is the daughter of Joseph and Laurie Smolinski. She is a member of the trip club, ETS, pep club, SADD, o

range team and youth group. Smolinski is vice president of the pep club and earned her varsity letter in track. In the fall Smolinski plans to attend North Central Michigan College and become a phlebotomist. Angela Beach (3.13) is the daughter of Curtis and Toni Beach. She is a member of ETS, SADD, trip club, pep club and yearbook. She is also a member of her church youth group and has worked with children in vacation Bible school for four years. She has earned the perfect attendance award. Beach plans to attend Alpena Community College then transfer to Saginaw Valley State University or join the Air Force.

Kaitlin Hirschman (3.13) is the daughter of James and Ann Hirschman. She is a member of the pep club, ETS, SADD, orange team, was a 2009 Miss Posen contestant and the yearbook. Following her high school graduation Hirschman plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University. Michael Metivier (3.07) is the son of James Metivier and Rebecca Metivier. He is a member of ETS, SADD, ski club, orange team and yearbook and newspaper. Michael has also been a member of the football and track teams. He is president of the ski club and was named most valuable member of the track team. Metivier plans to study aviation mechanics at Northern Michigan University after graduation.
