Fourteen Onaway High School (OHS) students who have proven themselves to be successful scholars and effective leaders were inducted into the OHS chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) in a ceremony conducted Tuesday in the school?s cafetorium.

Established in 1921, the NHS honors students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character. Induction into the NHS is a prestigious distinction for young people and a mark of good citizenship.

?AS TREES in spring produce a new ring of growth making them stronger, I challenge each of you sitting up here tonight to grow this year in the four principles of our organization,? said adviser Kymberli Wregglesworth, speaking to the new and current members of the organization.

?Growth in scholarship will not only make you a better student, but you?ll also be a more informed citizen. Growth in leadership will help you set goals and live your life of purpose,? said Wregglesworth, as she continued her opening remarks.

?Growth in service will make you a more involved member of your community and you?ll gain empathy toward fellow human beings. Finally, growth in character will make you stronger and better able to deal with the tough choices you will face in your life.? Wregglesworth added a student?s decisions may not be the most popular sometimes, but they are each in

a position to set an example for their peers. AFTER VICE president Nicolette Olree officially opened the NHS meeting, four senior members: Allie Nave, Heather Hoffmeyer, Payton Lupu and Collin Hoffmeyer explained the four virtues that uphold the organization and lit candles after each of the students finished at the podium.

Stephanie Knight presented the meaning of the emblem, while Danielle Reece read a poem. Olree had the candidates stand and raise their right hand for administering of the pledge of membership. Nave read the names of the new inductees, who came forward to sign the book of membership.

The new members include: Faith Chapman, Molly Cleaver, Rebekah Cope, LeAnne Fenstermaker, Alex Fullerton, Thomas Hext, Debra LaLonde, Bryer McGinn, Kyle Moreau, Melissa Pomranke, Brooklynn Szymoniak, Christian Tollini, Taylor Watson and Logan Wilkinson. Wregglesworth gave a special thanks to parents and family, ?without your love and support none of these students would be here.? The ceremony wrapped up with students giving a round of applause to their supportive families. As a final note, Wregglesworth said NHS members will be cleaning a two-mile stretch of M-68 between Stoney Creek Restaurant and Lounge and South Porter Road in late April and hoped people would honk their horns in support and not litter. They also will be having father-daughter and mother-son dinner dance later in the spring.
