Posen eighth-grader wins free throw state title

Korynn Hincka is 14 years old, but already has near radar aim from the free-throw line, and probably a little bit of ice in her veins. The Posen youth, who already stands above most boys and girls her age, was a cut above the other competitors in her age group in winning the Knights of Columbus (K of C) state free-throw championship. Representing the Knights of Columbus Council 6657, Korynn was good on 21 of 25 free throw attempts.

HINCKA, THE daughter of Eric and Tammy Hincka, was awarded a trophy for being the best overall shooter from both peninsulas. Both the Lower and Upper peninsulas conducted their finals at the same time. The Lower Peninsula finals was in Mt. Pleasant, while the Upper Peninsula championships were in Marquette.

The U.P. girl made 20, so the state title went to Hincka. If there had been a tie, a shoot off at each respective site would have immediately taken place, with updates coming on the phone. Hincka had to overcome a lot of pressure. Shooting third of six, she followed a young lady who made 21 of 25.

WHEN KORYNN?S turn came, she went to the line and missed the first two. With only two misses to spare, she made the next 21 of 23. When none of the other shooters could match that, a shoot off was needed. In the shoot off, each girl would get five chances. Hincka won the coin flip and elected to go first and made four of five, while her competitor could only get two to fall. It will bring an end to her competition, although her scored will be compared to other girls in the country to determine a national champion. Korynn?s cousin, Nick Hincka, 14, the son of Clarence Jr. and Beth Hincka, made 14 of 25 shots in his appearance at the finals. At regionals he made 23 of 25.
