Vikings in search of district title

The match ups were set for Wednesday night?s Class D semifinals in Mio, with four teams vying for a chance to play for a tournament trophy Friday evening. Hillman (12-9) got passed Hale, 28-26, and will play the Vikings, while Fairview and Mio were set to play in the second game of Wednesday?s doubleheader (past press time). Posen and Hillman were to play in the first game at 6 p.m. The Vikings (13-7), winners of 11 of 13, hadn?t played in nine days heading into the tournament. Their second to last regular season win was at Hillman, Feb. 18 to give the girls the season sweep.

Wednesday also marked the return of head coach Karl Momrik to the sideline. He suffered a heart attack Feb. 9 and lost his mother Feb. 20. Momrik, who said he is getting stronger every day, has been cleared by doctors to coach again, but don?t expect him to be hopping up and down. He?ll leave that to assistant coach Kevin Romel. Momrik said he was going to offer support and input to players heading in, and coming out of the game.

Monday was Momrik?s first practice back with his team. ?It was great to be back in the gym again,? said Momrik. The Vikings are looking for their first district title in three years.
