Preparing for districts Hurons go 3-1

The Rogers City Hurons varsity softball team went 3-1 on the week with their only loss a 7-5 game against #11 ranked Pine River. The Hurons faced Pine River in game one of the Glen Lake Tournament Saturday. Rogers City took a 1-0 lead as Nikkie LaLonde walked in the top of the second, was sacrificed to second by Emily Marx and scored on a hit by Sara Carpenter. Pine River answered with three runs in the bottom of the second. The score would stay 3-1 until the top of the fifth when Carpenter led off the inning with a single, Linnea Brege walked and Greta Grambau singled Carpenter home. Brege would then score on a fielder?s choice before Katie Tulgestke singled in two Hurons to give the Hurons a 5-3 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Pine River scored twice to tie the score at 5. The Hurons went quietly in the sixth before Pine River added two more runs to take the 7-5 lead and ultimately the game. Logan Schuiteman took the loss on the mound allowing three earned runs, eight hits and striking out five. Carpenter led the Hurons with two hits while Tulgestke, Marx and Grambau each had one hit. The Hurons then defeated Glen Lake 6-1 in the consolation game of the tournament. Glen Lake scored first as they took a 1-0 lead into the second inning. Rogers City then scored three in the third, one in the fourth and two in the sixth while keeping Glen Lake scoreless to take the game.
Katie Darga earned the win on the mound allowing five hits and an unearned run while striking out 12. The Hurons had 13 hits led by Schuiteman with two hits and two RBI. Sam Hall had two hits and an RBI while Marx, Darga and Grambau each had two hits. Tulgestke and Danielle Rhode each had a double and an RBI while LaLonde and Carpenter each had hits. LAST THURSDAY at home the Hurons sealed second place in the conference as they defeated Rudyard twice to finish 7-3 in the conference. Cheboygan won the conference with a record of 9-1.

The Hurons are now 15-13 on the season. They hosted Alcona today (Thursday) and will host Posen Friday in a softball only doubleheader. Tuesday the Hurons will travel to Gaylord for their final regular season games before hosting the district tournament on June 5.
