Huron athletes honored by Boosters at awards night

A night of athletic awards was capped with the award of the major trophies at the Huron Athletic Boosters Association last week. Logan Schuiteman, the daughter of Dr. Jay and Deb Schuiteman, earned the Danny Rose Award as the female athlete of the year. Logan was a standout in basketball, volleyball and softball for the Hurons. Ben Tulgestke, son of Duane and Heidi Tulgestke, earned the J.A. Valentin Award as the male athlete of the year. Ben had outstanding seasons in football, wrestling and baseball.

Steve Truran was honored for his support of Huron athletes as Tim Horn presented him with the John Geyer Award, given to a community member for outstanding dedication by a volunteer or supporter of Rogers City High School (RCHS) sports. Other special awards were given to Schuiteman and Tony Bannasch, as the Jim Quinn Award for scholar athletes; the Judy Paradise Award for outstanding dedication on and off the field to Greta Grambau; the Alan Dagner Memorial Scholarship ($250) to Tyler Szumila; the Chuck Altman Award to Bailey Andrzejewski as the freshman track athlete of the year; the Mark Smolinski Award to David Lewandowski for outstanding dedication by a football athlete; Emily Marx and Katie Darga shared the JoLen Flewelling Award as the junior softball athletes of the year; and Evan Lamb earned the John Florip Award as the freshman wrestler of the year.

Each coach awarded the most valuable and most improved athletes for their sports. Earning most valuable for their sports were: Ben Tulgestke (football); Greta Grambau (basketball and cross country); Joe Sobeck (cross country); Robert Dietlin (bowling); Erik Meharg (basketball); Brando

n Haneckow (track) Tayler Bannasch and Katie Darga (bowling); Leilani Kortman (track); Zach Munn (golf); Amanda Smolinski (volleyball); Devin Pommerenke (wrestling); and Brogan Brege (cheerleading). Most improved honors for their teams were earned by: Jesse Wilbert (football); Sara Carpenter (basketball); Paul Wilbert (cross country); Tom Darga (bowling); Chris Vogelheim (basketball); Vinny Szczerowski (track); Amanda Krajniak (track); Nick Kamyszek (golf); Emily Marx (volleyball); Alexander Bidlake (wrestling); Bailey Andrzejewski (cross country); Ashley Budnick (bowling); and Stephanie Crocker (cheerleading).

Awards for baseball and softball will be given out at the conclusion of the season. Master of ceremonies Karl Grambau acknowledged the great work done by the Huron Athletic Boosters president Jay Schuiteman, who will leave the presidency after two outstanding years of service. Mike Darga is the new president for the coming year. The boosters sponsored the awards and drew praise from each of the coaches. Special mention was made of the girls bowling state championship team, the boys state runner-up team, two-time defending state wrestling champion Devin Pommerenke and district championships earned by the boys basketball, the volleyball and wrestling teams.
