Huron golf team ends season with appearance at conference, regionals

The 2010 golf season concluded with the Straits Area Conference (SAC) tournament and the regional meet. At the SAC championship June 1 at the Black Bear in Vanderbilt, the Hurons placed fifth out of seven teams. Zach Munn had an 85 and Wade Wilk shot a 91 as the top two Huron golfers that day. Other scores were Craig Nadolsky 103, Alec Brietzke 104, and Nick Kamyszek 113. Cheboygan won the meet and SAC champions. Low man of the meet and Individual conference champ was Brandon Vizina of Inland Lakes who shot a 72.

Munn turned in his best 18-hole round of the year to help secure his spot on the all-conference team. He placed ninth with an average of 43.1 for nine holes. Wilk turned in his best performance of the year at his last high school competition. He finished 24th in the conference.

?Everyone shot their average or better today, which I was waiting for all year, and it resulted in our best team score of the year. We were able to put it together at the right time. We played with confidence in our short game today where I saw quite a few very nice chips and putts on some fairly tricky greens, ? said coach Dave Haselhuhn. Team scores were Cheboygan 319, Inland Lakes 346, St. Ignace 347, Sault Ste. Marie 367, Rogers City 383, Rudyard 386 and Newberry 402.

Three Hurons participated in the individual regional June 3 at the Mistwood in Lake Ann. Munn had a 95 while Kamyszek shot a 119 and Nadolsky had a 134. ?The boys were looking to qualify for the state tournament in a field of over 72 golfers where only three qualified to advance and there were some extremely talented golfers there,? Haselhuhn said. Low man was Brandon Vizina of Inland Lakes with a 72. ?All three will be returning next year and I hope the experience will help prepare them for next season. It should drive them to return again next year as individuals for sure, but also help lead their team back to regionals as well,? Haselhuhn said.
