Junior girls latest to qualify for state play

With the Rogers City Area Little League Major Girls? all-stars returning from the state finals after sweeping the district tournament the Junior Girls? team swept their district tournament and will head to the state finals in Melvindale on July 30. The Junior Girls defeated Cheboygan, for the second time in the district tournament, Monday 11-3 to take the District 13 title and earn a trip to the state finals. Brooklyn Idalski went the distance on the mound allowing just three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five.

Cheboygan took the early lead as they scored one in the top of the first. Rogers City scored one in the bottom of the third to tie the game at one before exploding for 8 runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-1 lead and they never looked back. Logan Fleming had an inside-the-park home run, which according to coach Dennis Meredith would have been over the normal softball fence had their been one. Courtney Streich and Morgan Hall each had a triple. Rebecca Meredith added a single and a double and Brenna Hincka had a single in the win.

ROGERS CITY earned a spot in the finals by winning their first two games of the tournament. In the first game Friday, they defeated Cheboygan 16-4. Idalski earned the win on the mound going four innings allowing just one run on two hits and a walk while striking out three. Nikki Radke pitched the final inning of the mercy rule shortened game allowing three runs on two hits and three walks while striking out one. Rogers City scored two in the first, two in the third and fourth and 10 in the fifth en route to the win. Leading hitter for Rogers City was Rebecca Meredith who was 4-4 with a double and a triple. Idalski was 2-4 with a double, Streich was 2-3 with a walk and four runs scored and Fleming was 2-4 with three runs scored. Radke and Hall also each had hits in the game.

IN GAME TWO of the district tournament Rogers City defeated North Emmet 8-3 on Saturday. Rogers City took an early 2-0 lead in the first before North Emmet scored three in the fourth. Rogers City answered with one in the sixth to tie the game before exploding for five runs in the seventh to take the win. Streich started on the mound going six innings allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six. Idalski came on in relief as she pitched the final inning and secured the win.

Fleming was 2-3 in the game while Rebecca Meredith, Sarah Meredith, Cassie Brege and Streich each had one hit. WITH A TRIP to the state finals next weekend the Junior Girls? team will be doing fundraising to pay for the trip beginning with a hot dog sale at Calcite Credit Union today (Thursday) from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and possibly a bottle drive as well as helping with the Presque Isle Girls? Softball (PIGS) tournament over the weekend.

THE MAJOR GIRLS traveled to Clinton for the state tournament and won their first game before losing two in a row to be eliminated from the tournament. Rogers City defeated Rochester Hills Saturday 5-2 behind the pitching of Alexa Quaine who went all six innings striking out one and solid defense. Rogers City scored one in the first and one in the second to take an early 2-0 lead and never looked back. Rochester Hills scored one in the third and Rogers City answered with two to take the 4-1 lead. Both teams added one in the fifth to make the final score 5-2. Lizzi Martin and Autumn Idalski led the hitting attack as they each had two singles.

SUNDAY ROGERS City fell to Marquette 13-3. Marquette scored six in the first and five in the second to jump out to the 11-0 lead. They added two more in the third to make it 13-3 before Rogers City tried to rally in the fourth scoring three runs. Martin started on the mound and was relieved in the first by Taylor Chojnacki. Idalski had one single in the game.

SUNDAY IN their final game of pool play Rogers City lost to Constantine 7-1 to end their state tournament. After three innings the score was tied at one but Constantine scored six in the fifth to take the win. Quaine went five innings on the mound striking out five. Idalski had a single, Kayla Fluery had a double and Ryley Schalk

had a single for Rogers City.

AS HOSTS of the District 13 Minor Girls? all-star tournament the Rogers City team won their first game Friday against Cheboygan 8-6. Two Hannah?s combined for the pitching duties for Rogers City as Hanna Dittmar started the game going the first three innings before Hannah Fleming relieved her for the fourth and fifth innings, Dittmar then returned to the circle for the sixth inning. Dittmar recorded five strikeouts in the game while Fleming recorded four. Camryn Bullock led the hitting attack with two hits while Fleming, Samantha Lenard and Susan Kuznicki each had one hit.

In their second game Rogers City was unable to overcome North Emmet losing 11-5. Bullock started on the mound going the first two innings before being relieved by Fleming. Fleming led the hitting attack with two hits while Mary Brege, Bullock and Dittmar each had one hit. WITH A 1-1 record Rogers City squared off against Tri-Rivers in the semi-finals. Rogers City fell 14-8 to finish third in the district. Dittmar started on the mound recording three strikeouts in two innings of work before Fleming came in and recorded two strikeouts. Fleming led the hitting attack with three hits while Dittmar added two. Kuznicki, Tracy Peters and Lenard each added a hit in the loss.
