On July 28, local leader Mike Myers, of Myers Construction Services was honored with an Everyday Hero Award at the annual ?Night of Heroes? event at the Palladium Theater in Birmingham. Sara Dimick, a 2010 Rogers City High School graduate, wrote a scholarship essay about Myers, which was selected as one of six winning submissions in Michigan. Originally, there were 230 nominations.

?I was very overwhelmed,? said Myers. ?Sara?s way of telling me was, ?I received a scholarship, and oh by the way?? ? The scholarship is for $2,500. She?ll be attending Lake Superior State University in the fall to study marine biology. THE PRESTIGIOUS award celebrates the lives of everyday people in the workplace who through extraordinary commitment, courage, compassion and integrity, are changing lives and inspiring others.

?Mike is an everyday hero, never taking any glory for himself, but always ready to serve others with open arms and a smile,? stated Dimick in her essay. She said, ?he runs the family agriculture business and works independent contracts for HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development)? Any person who can hold down two jobs and give to his community is to be commended.?

Dimick cited Myers? involvement as Kiwanis Club president, Presque Isle Soccer Association chairman, Nautical Festival Committee member, as we

ll as his involvement with Friends of the Rogers City Wrestling Association. ?WHEN MR. Myers takes on a responsibility, he is committed to making a difference for the organization and community as a whole,? stated Dimick. ?Rogers City is a better community because of Mr. Myers? commitment to service of his fellow man.? Myers has donated hundreds of pounds of beef to Kiwanis and teaches his children responsibility and money management, the essay states. Dimick mentioned several other examples, including his involvement in bringing the United States Coast Guard helicopter to fly over the 2009 Nautical Festival.

Myers said, ?It is quite an honor to be nominated and recognized by someone like Sara, who does so much in the community. I think, whatever community she lands in, hopefully it?s Rogers City, and she?ll be a huge asset.? The RARE Everyday Hero Scholarship program is currently seeking scholarship submissions.
