Hillman is the first test for Huron football team on Friday

If it is Hillman, this must be football season. Each of coach Mike Kosiara?s seven seasons as head football coach in Rogers City have begun with a game against the Tigers. And each season has begun with a Huron win, including Kosiara?s first as a head coach in 2004. Hillman is coming off a 6-3 season which saw them win five straight games, after losses to Rogers City (26-20) and Rudyard (43-14) to start the 2009 campaign. According to a report in the Montmorency County Tribune, Hillman lost six starters from last year. Coach Bill Koenig said Jordon VanPamel and Tyler Banks are competing to be the starting quarterback. Since its 0-9 season in 2005, the Tigers have put together winning seasons every year since, with the exception of 2008 when the team finished at 5-5.

Rogers City will start Jesse Wilbert at quarterback, a senior who backed up Pat Quaine last season. Quaine is on the sidelines again, but as a volunteer assistant to Kosiara. Chad Coolman, formerly the successful junior varsity coach, moves up to varsity to call the defensive signals. Former assistant coach Andy Hayhoe took a job out of town last year.

The Hurons face five opponents which made the playoffs last season including Hillman (6-3), Boyne City (6-4), St Ignace (6-5), Inland Lakes (6-4) and Rudyard (9-2). Rogers City hosts Boyne City Sept. 3 in the first home game. Other games include (and their 2009 record) at Alcona (3-6) Sept. 10, at St. Ignace (6-5) Sept. 17, hosting Inland Lakes (6-4) Sept. 24 and at Rudyard (9-2) Oct. 1. The Hurons play at home for the last three games against Onaway (2-7) Oct. 8, Newberry (2-7) Oct. 15 and Oscoda (4-5) Oct. 22.
