Peg Herring recipient of Monarch Award

The United Communities Foundation?s Monarch Award recognizes an outstanding individual and/or organization that makes a difference in Presque Isle County and creates a positive influence for the residents by enriching their lives in the area of arts, culture, and education.

This year?s recipient is Peg Herring for her outstanding achievement and contribution in the literary arts within Presque Isle County.

As a lifelong resident in Onaway, she taught at the Onaway Area Schools for 26 years, teaching high school English, World History, and speech. She was instrumental in expanding the drama program at the school, arranging annual trips to Toronto so that students could experience live professional theater. She often times wrote plays so that all the students who wanted to perform on stage had the opportunity. Many of her plays have been published so that other schools can benefit.

With her lifelong love of writing, Herring began writing novels full time. After her retirement from teaching in 2002, she began seeking publication for her work, ?MacBeths?s Niece? which was published in 2008. She has since published three novels with two more in the works.

She spent several years after retirement writing grants for local non-profit organizations. She was responsible for the Onaway Area Schools receiving a $500,000 grant to upgrade its elementary reading program as well as grants for the special education department, the music department and other school projects. She secured initial funding for the restoration of the old train depot for the Millersburg Historical Society. Herring travels extensively to speak to audiences about literary publ

ishing and conducting writing workshops.
