Huron teams win home meet

The Rogers City Huron cross country teams hosted the Maurice Dewey Invitational Saturday and took first place in both high school races as well as second in both middle school races to keep four plaques at home. With light rain drizzling throughout most of the morning as well as a strong cool wind the Hurons ran great on their home course to take first out of five teams. Freshman Korynn Hincka of Posen finished the course in 23:11, placing third to be the first Huron runner in. Sophomore Bailey Andrzejewski finished fifth at 24:20 and junior Sierra Centala came in at 25:11 for eighth place.
Freshman Jenny Guenterberg came in 12th at 27:13 and Michelle Belusar finished 13th at 27:17 to round out the scoring for the Hurons. Rogers City came in first with 41 points while St. Ignace was second with 53 points and Onaway third at 56. Other teams were Cheboygan and Oscoda. Other finishers for the girls? team were Hilary Viegelahn who was 14th at 27:23 and Leilani Kortman who was 15th at 27:33. SOPHOMORE PAUL Wilbert finished third at 19:37 to lead the boys? team to a first place finish. Three Hurons finished together as Warren Beach was sixth at 20:10, Joe Sobeck was seventh at 20:11 and Colton Fessler was eighth at 20:13. Vinny Szczerowski was 18th at 22:43 to round out the scoring for the Hurons.
Other finishers for the boys were Vincent Kuznicki who was 32nd at 26:39, Scott Williams who was 33rd at 27:44 and Zach Belland was 35th at 29:19. The Hurons finished with 42 points. Onaway was second at 52 and Cheboygan was third at 70.
?EVERYONE RAN really well but Paul Wilbert and Jenny Guenterberg really stepped it up. We had some health issues with some of the runners not feeling well but we were able to step it up and win our home invitational,? said coach Rob Kortman. IN MIDDLE school action both the boys? and girls? teams finished second. Alex Andrzejewski was third for the boys at 14:27 and Jacob Flemming was fourth at 14:37. Izaiah Hincka was 14th at 16:30 and Hunter Bruning was 16th at 16:34. For the middle school girls Amber Wirgau was second at 15:03, Amber Nowicki was sixth at 15:52, Kaitlyn Bruning was seventh at 16:00, Sami Bober was 10th at 16:38 and Brooke Dubie was 11th at 16:39 as the Hurons were second with 36 points, just seven points behind first place St. Ignace.
Other finishers for the middle school girls were Amber Pilarski who was 21st at 17:50, Alysse Hemple 22nd at 17:55, Maddie Stieger 23rd 18:27, Ryley Schalk 25th 18:40, Taylor Shay 27th 19:36,
The Hurons were in action Tuesday evening in Cheboygan for the first Straits Area Conference meet of the season but results were not available at press time. They will be at Central Lake Saturday and at St. Ignace Tuesday.
