The Rogers City Hurons varsity volleyball team is on a roll as they defeated Alcona Tuesday evening and won their first home match of the year last week. Tuesday in Alcona the Hurons won 25-23, 25-14 and 25-17 to take the match. Junior Amanda Smolinski had 15 kills and five digs in the win. Senior libero Emily Marx had nine digs and 12 ace serves in the match. Senior Shelby Schleben had seven aces in the match while Brittany Ciupka had two kills and an ace. Linnea Brege had six ace serves and 18 set assists. ?Overall we played well. We passed well and ran some great plays. Amanda was just pounding them Tuesday night and Emily (Marx) had a great serving match. We show improvement every time we play and that is all I can ask for,? said coach Kristy Smolinski.

THE HURONS hosted their first home action of

the season last Thursday and defeated the Oscoda Owls in three straight games to take the match. Winning 25-12, 25-18 and 25-20 the Hurons entertained their home crowd with the match win over Oscoda. ?The first game of the match we played quite well, we were clicking and running some good plays. In the second game we started to play down a little and passing was off, but we still played pretty decent. The third game I was making different substitutions and they were just not playing together. Passing was still off and trying to run plays from the 10-foot line can be challenging at times,? said coach Smolinski.

Brege had 15 set assists in the match. Sophomore Lindsey Claus had nine kills while junior Amanda Smolinski had seven set assists and nine kills. Senior Taylor Darling had five ace serves and 10 digs. Schleben had three ace serves and four kills. Marx had eight digs and junior Abbey Idalski added four digs. ?Overall we still took the match. We had some added variables to the match as Rebecca Peacock was back on the floor for the first time this season and we ran Emily Marx as a libero for the first time. Both of those changes effected the lineup and added a little confusion,? said coach Smolinski. The Hurons are in Saginaw Saturday and will travel to St. Ignace Tuesday. The next home match for the Hurons will be Sept. 28 against Sault Ste. Marie.
