Weather was a downer in Millersburg

For more than a decade-and-a-half organizers of the annual Millersburg Homecoming celebration have been blessed with nice weather. The weatherman wasn?t as kind this year, as rain, wind and cooler temperatures spoiled some of the fun.

According to organizer Amy Whitsitt, some of the activities Saturday were cancelled, including the annual water fight and the inflatable attractions the children of the community have loved wouldn?t be able to withstand the extreme wind gusts. ?We figure it has been 16 years since we had bad weather on the Labor Day weekend,? said Whitsitt.

Some parade entries were no shows because there was concern the rain and wind would do too much damage. However, once the parade got rolling, the sun peeked out from behind the clouds.

The 2010 Cardinal softball team rode through as the grand marshals, while Grace and Gertrude Freel were this year?s honored citizens. The weather also chased Jim Bancroft?s blue grass band from the lawn of the depot into the refurbished waiting area of the historic building. It was cozy, but th

e show still went on as planned.

The depot enjoyed solid attendance, and they heard great comments about the new 1900?s kitchen exhibit, but it is believed the weather kept people away as well. The first-ever chicken dinner meals served at Millersburg Inn sold out.

Winner of the Millersburg Fire Association bump and run feature race Sunday was Shawn Fetts of Alpena. The powder puff winner was Liz Morrow of Cheboygan. Other winners include: heat one, Lee Schley II; heat two, Norm Alexander; heat three, Troy Elowsky; heat four, Andy Howdy; dash for the cash, Dave Wolgast; pretty car, Mike Lail.

The tractor winner was Ken Long of Florida. A Mayville man, whose name was not available for this article, won the wooden school canoe. Details of the Saturday morning race will be in next week?s Outlook.
