Pommerenke continues to shine on national mat

In preparation for his senior season as the Hurons heavyweight wrestler before a college career at Central Michigan University can begin, Rogers City senior Devin Pommerenke added yet another national title to his list of accomplishments which continues to grow. Pommerenke won the National United Wrestling Association for Youth (NUWAY) Halloween National Championship title over the weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pommerenke was invited by some wrestling friends in California to be one of 16 Michigan wrestlers competing at the tournament.

Flying out Friday Pommerenke stayed at Bally?s Hotel and Casino where the competition also took place in the main ballroom. Pommerenke got to enjoy a little of Vegas as he walked the strip, went into the famous Bellagio and saw many other popular sites. ?Vegas was crazy. I had a really good time,? said Pommerenke who was in Vegas for the first time. Pommerenke won his way through the tournament in convincing style pinning three opponents and defeating another, the top ranked wrestler in California for heavyweight, 2-1 to take the title.

Although he added another accomplishment Pommerenke is excited for his senior year at Rogers City High School (RCHS) as he feels the team will be tough this year. The Hurons are preseason ranked number 7 in Division IV. Pommerenke is the top ranked heavyweight in

the state across all divisions. Pommerenke is also ranked second among all Michigan seniors behind 119-pound Connor Youtsey of Mason who was third in the state as a freshman followed up by two state titles.

Pommerenke enters his senior wrestling season as a Huron, scheduled to begin Dec. 2 at home with a record of 171-11 including 118 consecutive wins. He enters the season with 1,180 team points and needs just 320 to break Dylan Centala?s record of 1,482. D-Pom needs just nine pins to break Duane Woloszyk?s record of 134 career pins and just 49 wins to be the new owner of the career wins record at RCHS.

Pommerenke has already become owner of most freshman victories (53), most consecutive wins (118 and counting), season pins (47) and season record as he has twice in a row had seasons of 59-0.
