Wrestlers to begin with two home meets

Winter sports season is quickly approaching and the Rogers City Hurons varsity wrestling team will start their season with two home meets. The first is a quad meet on Dec. 2 featuring Rogers City, Gaylord, Alpena and St. Ignace. Action is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. and the Hurons will face Gaylord and Alpena in the first two duals of the season. ?We will be looking to set the tone and develop team chemistry. We want to earn some respect by wrestling quality opponents right off the bat. That sets the tone for us, lets us know where we are, lets us know what we need to work on and develop and gives us an idea of what moves we need to make in our lineup,? said coach Pat Lamb who is assisted by Rob Kortman and Greg Pietsch.

The Hurons are currently ranked seventh in Division IV and have seven wrestlers ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes. ?Rankings don?t mean much but having seven in the top 10 is great, especially considering we have some kids they didn?t even think about,? said Lamb.

On Dec. 4 the Hurons will host a tournament with Escanaba, Cheboygan and Newberry as confirmed guests while Lamb continues looking to add another team or two. With 20 out for the team this year including three from Posen joining through the co-op the team will have plenty of depth. Returning to the team are seniors Leilani Kortman, Travis Fleis, Daniel Marx, Keegan Urban, Greg Tulgestke and Devin Pommerenke. Returning juniors are Joey Sobeck, Blaise Ryan and Chris Pflug. Evan Lamb, Caleb Pommerenke and Daniel Pflug return as sophomores.
