Posen?s strong defensive half sparks 41-point win

There were shades of last season when Posen pulled off the upset of highly ranked Arenac Eastern (A-E). The Eagles returned to Posen last Friday and were looking to return the favor. The game was close early, as Arenac slowed the pace, but as the game progressed Posen’s tenacious defense proved to be much too much. A-E (3-2) is not nearly the same team, while Posen (6-0, 4-0) has continued to improve. The girls won the game going away, 63-23. Lindsey Bartz, who led all scorers with 18, was among three players in double figures. LeAnn Strzelecki and Korynn Hincka both had a dozen each.

A-E scored consecutive buckets at the end of the first quarter and trailed by only two, 10-8. Bartz scored the first two baskets of the second quarter on plays started by a nice pass by Paige Lewandowski and a steal by Strzelecki. POSEN STEPPED up the pressure and Hincka made one of the most outstanding plays of the early season. Near her own basket, she reached out as far a

s she could go to pick off a pass, took one step to the cylinder and scored the layup.

That gave the Vikes a 16-8 lead. The halftime advantage was 27-14. Posen coach Karl Momrik said his defense took things up a notch in the second half. After A-E traded field goals early in the third to get within 11, 29-18, the Vikings took off with a 16-0 run. The Eagles would score only nine points the entire second half. ?We sent a message to the rest of the North Star League tonight,? said Momrik. The only glaring aspect of the game needing work is free-throw shooting as the girls went 6-for-19 from the line.

Hincka pulled in 11 rebounds, while Ashley Meyers had seven steals. Strzelecki added six steals. THE JUNIOR varsity also won in blowout fashion, 42-16. Bev Bednarski scored 22. Monica Bartz had 8. Next on the schedule is a home game next Wednesday against Rogers City. After that it?s off to Hale Jan. 7, contrary to the master schedule, which says they should be home.
