Sportsbeat, Stats and stories to keep you warm

by Peter Jakey

There?s nothing like winter sports to warm up these cold nights. For that, we should all be thankful for the work our athletes put in to keep our interest. There have been some interesting statistics and stories from the last week that I wanted to share. First, a little story from halftime of the Posen vs. Rogers City boys? basketball game. The coaches had a talk with senior Shane Hentkowski, who scored only two points in the first half. He led many of the Viking statistics in 2009.

?We asked him why he was being so timid,? said Posen head coach Steve Hentkowski. ?I told him, you?ve been here four years, just go play basketball.? That he did. He scored 18 points in the final quarter-and-a-half. ?Rogers City did an excellent job from the free-throw line in the game, making 9-of-13, including a perfect 6-for-6 in the second quarter.

?Fourteen is the deficit the Hurons faced late in the first quarter. They not only got back in the game, they took a three-point lead before the wheels fell off. Huron coach Jesse Streich is confident the boys will get better as the season progresses.

Here are some wrestling stats from Advance beat reporter Angie Asam: ?Junior Huron wrestler Joey Sobeck had 99 wins heading into Wednesday?s matches at St. Ignace. Sophomore Evan Lamb wrestled five times last Saturday and pinned each opponent. Senior Keegan Urban wasn?t far behind with four pins. His fifth match was a void. Two-time

state champ Devin Pommerenke is only five pins away from the career pin record held by Duane Woloszyk. The Central Michigan University-bound senior should own almost all the records by the time he?s done. ?Here?s a wild one from last Friday girls? basketball game at Mio. The host Thunderbolts attempted 35 three- pointers; however, they only made seven. The Viking offense was far from where it needs to be, but they won the game with a 13-4 offensive rebounding advantage in the second half. It?s a stat like that that tells the real story. Freshman Korynn Hincka had 18 rebounds, while senior Lindsey Bartz had 13.

Roger Wenzel said he had an ?awesome? experience at Ford Field for the Division VI championship game. ?I had a great crew to work with, and it?s a great facility to work in. I was really pumped up,? said Wenzel, who was the head linesman in charge of the chain gang. From an official?s standpoint, it was a quiet afternoon for the most part. ?Everybody was there to play ball,? said Wenzel. He is the head of Rogers City?s Department of Public Works and has been a football official for 18 years. It was his first finals. He worked the Ithaca vs. Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central game won by Ithaca. ?And here?s another local connection to Division I state football champ Lake Orion. Rogers City alumnus Jenny Ohlich is a teacher at the school. Her mom Connie was relaying my reports about Tyler Misiak to her daughter. Jenny posted this on my Facebook page: ?That was quite a ride for our football team this season – and we enjoyed every minute of it!?
