Gilpin concession project heading out for bids

by Peter Jakey, Managing Editor

Bid language for the new concession/restroom facility at Gilpin Memorial Field was accepted at Monday’s Rogers City Area Schools (RCAS) board of education meeting. If the weather cooperates, construction may get started in the spring and the facility may be available for any possible baseball or softball tournaments. It’s almost certain, it will be open for the next football season.

The collaborative project involving the Rogers City Area Boosters was reviewed and discussed at the last property and facilities planning committee, Dec. 21. United Design Associates, a Cheboygan firm hired by the board, provided bid language. WHILE THE long-awaited facility has been talked about and put on the back burner for decades, it only picked up steam the last year or more when the boosters offered to get involved. It will be

constructed behind the backstop of the Steven Schalk Memorial Baseball Field.

Advertisements for bids will be placed in this week’s Advance and bids will be accepted through Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. ?It’s broken up into four different parts,? said Huber. ?That being the general construction of the building, the excavation and septic work, the plumbing work for the project, and also the electrical work for the project. Each one has its own bid language.? A pre-bid review of the plans and requirements of the project has been set for prospective bidders Jan. 18 at 3:30 p.m. in the high school library.

IN OTHER business: ? The board approved the recommendation of the administrative staff to employ, on a temporary basis for the second semester, as follows: Anne Kosiara, Title I teacher aid; Amanda Karsten, at-risk teacher aid. Both have been authorized for up to seven hours a day. ? Due to higher than anticipated title monies the district will now be able to receive two additional SMART boards. The additional technology, once received will be installed together with the prior four boards that have been received. The installation service company is doing coordination of the install and is to be completed as soon as the two additional boards are in the district. ? The board accepted and acknowledged a $5,000 grant from Presque Isle Electric and Gas Communities First to purchase welding equipment for the metals program.
