Huron bowlers perfect on the weekend

by Angie Asam, Staff Writer The Rogers City bowling teams were in Gaylord Saturday for Northern Michigan Bowling Conference action and both teams went 2-0 on the day. The girls? team is now in a three-way tie for first at 5-1 with Gaylord and Cheboygan. Rogers City started the day with a 30-0 win over St. Ignace as they were dominant winning both baker games 183-81 and 167-112 to take totals 350-193. Regular game one was 835-698 in favor of the Hurons who also took game two 838-627 to take totals 1,673-1,325 and earn the shut out as they didn?t lose one individual matchup in the match.

Up against Petoskey in the second match of the day, the Hurons continued their dominance as they won 25-5 taking both baker games (164-119, 190-136), baker game totals 354-255, regular game one 768-739, game two 718-680 and totals 1,486-1,419. Senior Katie Darga who leads the conference in average at 209.5 rolled scores of 184, 202, 224 and 214 on the day. Senior Misty Curtis had games of 176, 163, 150 and 105. Freshman Margaret Spens, in her first varsity action of the year had a 159 game and also combined with Nicole Bannach for a 114 game.

Other bowlers and their scores on the day were Anna Lehman (147, 125, 149), Nicole Bannasch (169, 157), Ashley Budnik (157, 157, 133, 135) and Jessica Butera (139). Rogers City leads the conference with the high team game (955), high team series (1,808), high baker game (190) and high baker series (354). THE HURON boys? team leads the conference standings as they are a perfect 5-0 so far this season. Saturday the Hurons defeated Petoskey 21-9 in the first match of the day. Rogers City jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in the match as they took baker game one 199-106, game two 210-150 and totals 409-256. Rogers City then took regular game one 978-892 before losing game two 829-886. The Hurons held on to take totals 1,807-1,778 to take the match 25-5.

Their second match of the day would be much closer as the Hurons narrowly defeated Cheboygan with the final match score 15.5-14.5. Rogers Ci

ty took baker game one 151-148 but lost game two 195-210 and totals 346-358 to fall behind 6-4. The Hurons then took just two individual points and lost regular game one 861-921 to fall behind 13-6. With their backs against the wall the Hurons shined in the second regular game as they took 3.5 of the 5 possible individual points and game two 954-880 and took totals 1,815-1,801 to take the match. Along with being atop the conference standings for record, the Huron boys also lead the league as they have the highest team game (1,042), highest team series (2,066), high baker game (248) and high baker series (434).

Senior Robert Dietlin is also leading the conference with his 216 average while Justin Hazel is second at 209.9 and Ken Wirgau is third as he is averaging 200. Dietlin rolled scores of 246, 185, 215 and 226 Saturday. Justin Hazel had games of 214, 179 and 170. Wirgau had a 158, 223 and 176 on the day. Justin Hazel and Wirgau also combined for a 169 game. Other bowlers and their scores were Chris Bark (200, 154, 179), Zach Hazel (204, 176, 127, 159) and Zane Witzak (145). Witzak and Bark also combined to roll a 117. THE HURONS will be at Cheboygan Saturday where the girls? team will bowl against Sault Ste. Marie and Cheboygan while the boys will take on Alpena and Sault Ste. Marie.
