Hurons top Onaway to move to district finals Friday

In spite of a spirited effort by the Cardinals, the Onaway boys? basketball season came to an end at the hands of the Rogers City Hurons Wednesday at Gaylord St. Mary. Playing for the third time this season, the Hurons used a consistent attack and hard-nosed defense to notch a 76-41 win over Onaway (4-17). Friday?s district final game pits Rogers City against the run-and-gun Eagles from Burt Lake Christian Friday at 7 p.m. The game will be played at Gaylord St. Mary Cathedral High School in Gaylord.

Onaway?s Cory Grossman hit a free throw with 5:10 left in the first quarter to tie the score at 7-7 before the Cards rallied for their first lead of the day. Travis Perry split the Huron defense for a score and Joe O?Bradovich set up Andrew Perry with a great pass. That made the score 11-9 and forced the Hurons to call a timeout. Huron junior center Devin Hilla hit an inside banker and the free throw to give the Hurons a brief lead before a hustling Travis Perry struck again on a jumper with 2:22 left in the quarter.

But the Hurons came back with three-pointers by Jesse Wilbert and Chris Peacock to lead 19-13 at the end of one quarter. Rogers City scored 19 points in each of the four quarters in a mark of consistency. A trapping press gave the Cards trouble as Rogers City went on a 12-2 run over the first five minutes of the second quarter. Grossman?s short banker with 5:31

were the only Cardinal points over that span. With the score 38-20 at halftime, the Hurons came out of the locker room determined and a 14-5 run stretched the lead to 52-25 with 4:34 left in the third quarter. Shaun Curtis, who had seven of his team-high 11 points in the third quarter, nailed a three-pointer to slow the Hurons.

Rogers City was led by Wilbert with 15 points, Austin Brege with 14, Hilla with 11 and Jordan Bellmore with 10 points. Onaway trailed 57-32 to end the quarter. A three-pointer by Andrew Perry and a jumper by Curtis came before an 11-0 Huron run which came over a four-minute span.

Andrew Perry had 10 points while Grossman had nine, all in the first half, and Travis Perry added four, with all of his points coming in the first quarter. Rogers City will take on Burt Lake Christian, who topped a five-man team from Vanderbilt in Wednesday?s first game, in Friday?s district championship game.
