Snowmobile show draws good crowds

by Angie Asam, Staff Writer Organizers of the Antique and Vintage Snowmobile Show, always on the second weekend in March, will have to wait another year to try to reach 200 sleds as this year 166 sleds registered for the show. The 7th annual show was a success with snow allowing those bringing their sleds to the show the chance to take them for a ride around the area. With light snow falling most of the day Saturday, it created a great atmosphere for the show.

Friday evening the outhouse races were not as much of a draw as a year ago, but with both the Rogers City and Posen boys? basketball teams playing in district final games, and a play going on at the Rogers City Theater, people were busy. A good crowd still came out for the races; however, not many teams entered the outhouse race. Organizers then opened the event up to anyone at the races that wished to borrow an outhouse and race it up and down the track. Many young kids took advantage of the opportunity and raced time and time again, trying to get faster.

No one could overcome the Ocqueoc Outfitters ?Crappy Canoe? with Colton Fessler and Shawn Roby pulling while Nicholas Centala rode on the seat. Outhouses went up the course, around a stack of straw bales, and back to the starting line using the other lane, a feat the

se young men were able to accomplish in just more than 30 seconds. Following the outhouse races Friday evening people came out to enjoy live entertainment and the cash bar with ?Bobbing for Piranhas? performing inside the Water?s Edge.

SATURDAY THE sleds began showing up early with the show beginning at 9 a.m. and continued to show up throughout the morning. Many people came out to walk through the rows of sleds as well as check out what was for sale in the swap area. Visitors also enjoyed coming into the restaurant area to purchase tickets for the Chinese auction and browse through merchandise on sale.

After the show ended at 3:30 p.m. and the sleds were packed away for the trip home, 165 dinner tickets were sold for a whitefish and chicken dinner, complete with all the fixings, served buffet style before awards were handed out. (For award winners please see next week?s Advance). ?Bobbing for Piranhas? then again returned to the stage to entertain those gathered to enjoy the company of the event. As the show continues to grow and gather support, the organizers are already thinking about ways to make the show better next year when the show returns and brings traffic to downtown Rogers City.
