The Rogers City Hurons varsity softball team has started their season 4-0 after a sweep of the Gaylord Blue Devils last Thursday. The Hurons were scheduled to host their home tournament Saturday and be in Posen Tuesday; however, Mother Nature had different plans.

Rogers City took game one over the Blue Devils 5-2 behind sophomore pitcher Brooklyn Idalski who went the distance giving up two runs on nine hits while striking out seven. Sophomore Rebecca Meredith got the Hurons on the board in the second inning with a long home run to left-center field. Gaylord would answer with one in the bottom half of the second but with two nice plays from the mound Idalski was able to help her cause and put an end to the rally.

Senior catcher Emily Marx led off the fourth inning with a double and later scored on a one-out hit by freshman Morgan Hall. Rogers City would add three more in the top of the sixth when sophomore Nikkie LaLonde led off with a walk followed by a Marx single and doubles by Meredith, Hall and sophomore Brenna Hincka.

Hall finished the game with three hits and an RBI. Meredith and Hincka each had two hits and two RBI while Marx and Idalski each had two hits. Freshman Courtney Streich also added a hit. GAME TWO was a much different situation as the Hurons cruised to a 14-0 lead. Idalski was again the winning pitcher as she went three innings giving up four hits while striking out four. Freshman Nicole Radke then came on in relief allowing two hits while striking out two.

LaLonde led the way with three hits in the nightcap. Meredith added two hits and an RBI, Hincka had a triple and two RBI. Hall, Marx and Idalski each had a hit and an RBI and Streich added a hit. ?I am happy with the enthusiasm the squad has. The girls are trying hard and practices have been going well, only now if the weatherman would cooperate,? said coach Karl Grambau. The Hurons are scheduled to host Petoskey today (Thursday) and will open up the Straits Area Conference season in St. Ignace on Wednesday before a nonconference makeup doubleheader in Cheboygan Thursday.
