Sophomore Kallie Shimel earns all-state honors

Onaway sophomore Kallie Shimel was named to the Detroit Free Press honorable mention all-state team as well as the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan ?BCAM?s BEST? special mention team.

Shimel set a new school record this season when she made six three-pointers in a win over Rogers City on Feb. 15, a feat coach Marty Mix would consider one of the highlights of the sophomore’s season.

?She was a great kid to coach. She had a solid season and I was very happy to see

her get the post-season honors. It?s awesome. She was a solid team leader for us and was always contributing in some way. She is the type of player that you look forward to having back for a couple of years, she is going to have on impact on our conference,? said Mix.

In addition to the all-state honors, Shimel was a member of the second-team all Ski Valley Conference, was a member of the Weekly Choice all-area team, the Cheboygan Tribune first-team all-area and the Alpena News all-area second team. Shimel led the team in both field goal and three-point percentage as she averaged 12.5 points per game.

According to Mix even when she wasn?t having her best game scoring points she found ways to contribute. Shimel averaged 4.5 rebounds per game as well as a little more than two steals per game.
