County Fair runs this week through Sunday

The Presque Isle County Fair officially kicked off last night with the Queen?s Pageant, which was held at 7 p.m. at the former Millersburg Elementary School. From that pageant both a queen and a princess were crowned and they, along with their courts, will reign over the fair and its many events. Today (Thursday) from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. all exhibit entries were scheduled to arrive on the fairgrounds. Each day of the fair the exhibits and carnival rides by Schmidt Amusements open at noon. A general admission of $5 per person is charged at the gate and carnival rides are free.

?We have an extra ride coming this year. I think this is going to be a breaking year with more people in the gates. The better we do this year the better we can make the fair in the future,? said secretary Rita Tollini. The theme of the fair this year is ?Going Green? and a recycling bin has already been placed at the fairgrounds. Other than the absence of the heavy horse pullers the events of the fair remain pretty much the same with the exception of the addition of an old fashioned barn dance on Saturday evening.

Friday begins the events of the fair with final judging at 11 a.m. followed by a free kid?s archery shoot sponsored by the Presque Isle Coun

ty Sportsman?s Club at 2 p.m. A pie and ice cream social will be held at 5 p.m. Friday. Saturday at noon will be free kids games with a sawdust pile, a three legged race, wheel barrow races and sack races followed by the kid?s tractor pulls at 1 p.m. with prizes for first and second place.

Cedar Logs and Posts will be doing a drawknife demonstration at 2 p.m. followed by the mud bog which begins at 3 p.m. Registration for the mud bog begins at 12:30. Anyone interested in the mud bog can contact Sonny at (989) 734-3306. Another free kids archery shoot will be held near the horse arena at 3 p.m. as well.

Following the mud bog is the newest addition to the county fair, an old-fashion barn dance with local fiddlers and pickers as well as an open microphone and a bonfire. Sunday beginning at noon are the antique tractor pulls sponsored by the Tip of the Mitt Tractor association. The famous chicken drop will begin at 3 p.m. on Sunday followed by a silent auction and pie auction and all animals and exhibits being released at 5 p.m. For more on the fair, see the ad on page 2B or go to www.picountyfair.org.
