RC tops Alcona in three straight; improve to 12-10-2

The Rogers City Hurons’ varsity volleyball team defeated Alcona Tuesday in three straight to improve to 12-10-2 on the season. The Hurons won 25-11, 25-13 and 25-16. Sophomore Jena Tulgestke led the team with eight kills on the day. Senior Lindsey Claus had four kills and five digs in the match. Megan Quaine and Alexa Quaine each added five aces in the win.

“They played really good tonight. They gelled very well. Our passing was good, serving was good, hitting and blocking were good and our setting was good. Everyone did their job and we played very well,” said coach Jackie Quaine.

MONDAY AT home the Hurons swept Oscoda in three straight winning 25-18, 25-4 and 25-22. The Hurons took a 4-2 lead in game one and never looked back as senior Rebecca Meredith stepped to the service line and served eight straight points to make it 12-3 and really never looked back taking the first game.

With a 6-2 lead in game two freshman Sarah Meredith stepped to the service line and rattled off 13 straight points for the Hurons as they dominated play on the net for most of the evening and easily took game two.

Game three was a much closer set although the Hurons never appeared to be in danger after tying the score at 8 following a Cassie Brege ace they slowly distanced themselves from the Owls and were able to overcome some mistakes to take the game and the match.

Tulgetske and junior Morgan Hall each had four kills on the night. Junior Courtney Streich had seven assists and Rebecca Meredith had four aces.

SATURDAY THE Hurons won the Pickford Invitational with Streich and Claus earning all-tournament team honors. Rogers City defeated Mackinac Island 25-14 and 25-12 before losing to Pickford 25-15, 24-26 and 12-15. They then battled back to defeat Cedarville 25-13, 18-25 and 15-5.

In the finals against the hosting school the Hurons avenged their earlier loss winning 25-20 and 25-14 to take the title.

stke had 25 kills on the tournament. Claus had 16 kills and six blocks while Hall added eight blocks. Megan Quaine had nine aces while Nikkie LaLonde added seven aces and 17 digs. Streich had seven aces, 25 assists and 17 digs on the day.

LAST WEDNESDAY at a quad meet in Alpena the Hurons defeated Posen 25-16, 23-25 and 25-14 before losing to Cheboygan 21-25, 25-19, 16-25 and Alpena 23-25, 21-25, 25-21.

Claus had 15 kills, 17 digs, seven blocks and six aces on the day. Sarah Meredith had 12 kills. Alexa Quaine added 21 digs while Brooklyn Idalski had 17 digs. Brege added 22 assists.

The Hurons are at St. Ignace on Tuesday before hosting Sault Ste. Marie on Sept. 25 as the Straits Area Conference season begins.
