Coming off a huge conference win in five games against Rudyard at home last Tuesday, the Rogers City varsity volleyball team was in Onaway last Thursday for another competitive match. The Hurons did not come out on top in that one, but gained experience that will be vital as the post season nears.

Onaway defeated the Hurons in three straight 19-25, 17-25 and 7-25. “Onaway certainly lived up to their reputation as one of the top teams in Division IV. They dug up everything defensively and played very smart on the offense using our blockers hands to their advantage,” said coach Jackie Quaine.

Freshman Sarah Merdith led the team with six kills. Junior Courtney Streich had five kills and 12 set assists. Senior Lindsey Claus added four kills and two blocks.

Seniors Nikkie LaLonde and Brooklyn Idalski each had 11 defensive digs. Junior Cassie Brege added 11 set assists.

“It wasn’t our best night of playing the game all around. Our hitters were off and we need to be quicker moving our feet on defense. We have to learn not to give up on balls. We did have some of our major players out sick for the game. I think we will be a different team the next time we see Onaway,” said coach Quaine.

Courtney Striech sets up a shot for a teammate.

The Hurons are now 18-16-5 on the season and were in Cheboygan Wednesday (after press time). They will be at a tri-meet with Pellston and Gaylord Monday in Pellston, and at the Presque Isle County Championships in Onaway next Wednesday. From there all that remains is the conference championships on Oct. 27 at Sault Ste. Marie and the districts in Posen at the end of the month.
