Sophomore Joe Traynham added another athletic accomplishment to his credit last Friday as he finished 10th (18:12) at cross country regionals in Central Lake to advance to the state finals Saturday at Michigan International Speedway (MIS) in Brooklyn. Traynham has already made a name for himself on the wrestling mat, qualifying for the individual regional tournament a year ago.
He is the lone Cardinal that will participate at the state finals, which begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at MIS. The race will start in the infield of the racetrack before exiting and running around the grounds and parking area for about two miles. They will enter the track again and run the remainder of the race along the grassy edge of the track, finishing right where the racecars do.
Trayham will be looking to finish in the top 30 and earn all-state honors as he competes with more than 200 of the best runners in Division IV in the state.
OTHER FINISHERS for the Onaway boys’ team were Morgan McLean who was 49th at 20:18 and Preston Badgero who was 83rd at 22:57.
Senior Ashley LeCureux led the girls’ team with a 23rd place finish at 22:42. Hannah Materna was 26th at 23:00, Emily Estep was 60th at 26:17 and Megan Estep was 79th at 29:36.
