OHS girls’ basketball team gives back to community

The Onaway High School girls’ basketball team recently conducted a bottle drive to raise money for new warm-ups. Coach Marty Mix and his group of young ladies kept a tradition alive as they conducted that fundraiser; they gave a portion of what they raised to a local community service project.

This year the team chose to donate to the Goodfellows, an organization that ensures each family in need in the area can have a good holiday meal. “It’s a real important life lesson for these kids. When they earn something it is nice for them to learn to share with the community,” said Mix.

In the past the team has given afghans to the elderly, donated to Toys for Tots and Coats for Kids. This year it made sense to go with a purely local organization.

“What Terry Materna

and those guys do is nothing short of amazing. It is such a nice thing they are able to do and it really shows what a generous community we live in,” said Mix.

Not only are the student athletes going to be able to buy some new warm-ups for them when they go out and represent Onaway during games, but they were able to give back to the community that stands behind them in all of their endeavors.

As these students finish their education, graduate and leave Onaway to go to college, they will leave knowing they were a valuable part of the community.
