Cardinal boys will look to continue winning ways against GSM

Wintry conditions, including freezing rain and large accumulations of snow, forced the cancellation of Wednesday’s Onaway High School varsity boys’ basketball game at Central Lake.

The Cardinals are scheduled to return to action tonight (FridaY) against visiting Gaylord St. Mary. Onaway will enter that game having won two in a row, the latest of which was a 72-57 victory last Wednesday at Joburg.

That win improved the Cards’ record to 8-3 (6-3 Ski Valley Conference), and it came a day after a strong performance against Presque Isle County rival Rogers City.

“We played a great game on back-to-back nights,” said coach Eddy Szymoniak. “We’ve really picked things up defensively and we’re moving the ball really well as a team.

“Joburg is a team we went into overtime with (earlier this year), and this time we were in control of the game from the second quarter on. These are two good wins, both of them without a couple key guys.”

Onaway trailed J-L 18-17 after on

e quarter, but led 37-26 at the half and 55-37 after three periods. Carlos Bautista had 16 points and 16 rebounds to lead the way.

Rich Hoff Jr. scored 15 points, Andrew Prow scored 14, and Joe Sigsby scored 11.

Earlier in the evening, the OHS JV fell to 8-3 with a 70-62 loss to Joburg. Patrick Dunn had a monster game for the Cardinals with 32 points and 21 rebounds. JT Pasella scored 10 points for Onaway.

The Cardinals are scheduled to host the Snowbirds tonight, host Mancelona on Wednesday, and travel to Inland Lakes next Friday. The game at Central Lake has been rescheduled to February 11.
