Cardinal girls dominate Wolverine, win seventh straight

The Onaway High School (OHS) varsity girls’ basketball team improved to 9-2 (6-2 Ski Valley Conference) with a dominating win over visiting Wolverine. The win was the Cardinals’ seventh straight.

Onaway scored the game’s first 19 points, with Ashley LeCureux and Mariah Ehrke each connecting on a pair of baskets, and Erika Price draining back-to-back 3-pointers to complete the run.

The Wildcats hit a pair of buckets to trim the gap to 19-4, but Onaway scored the final three points of period one, to take a 22-4 lead, and the first 10 points of period two, extending the lead to 32-4.

Sam Brasseur hit a 3-pointer near the end of the second quarter to push the advantage to 38-8 at the half, and a basket by Ehrke with 4:30 left in period three gave the Cards a 40-point lead, 50-10, bringing about the running clock. The score was 52-12 after three quarters, and Wolverine scored the only basket of period four, as coach Marty Mix was able to give his reserves plenty of minutes with the game in hand.

LeCureux, Price and Ehrke all scored 10 points, while Brasseur scored eight, to pace the Cardinals. Gabbie Ogden scored six points to lead the Wildcats.

Earlier in the evening, the OHS junior varsity (JV) won its eighth straight game in equally convincing fashion, defeating Wolverine, 52-5. The win improved the JV’s record to 8-3.

Onaway led 18-0 after one period, stretching that to 28-0 before the Wildcats connected on a free throw to trim the gap to 28-1 at the half. The Cards led 40-5 through three frames and brought about the running clock early in period four.

Lexi Szymoniak scored 16 points, Elise Arkwood scored 12, Morganne Badgero scored 10, and Jade Galer scored eight. As was the case in the varsity contest, everyone on the JV played substantial minut

Last Friday, the varsity trailed for much of the game but played an excellent fourth period to defeat visiting Bellaire, 41-34. Onaway trailed 8-4 after one period, 11-9 at the half, and 25-21 through three frames.

The Cardinals outscored the Eagles 20-9 in the fourth to earn the victory. Ehrke and Temara Lupu scored eight points apiece, while Price scored seven, to lead Onaway.

The JV had an easier time with its Bellaire counterpart, winning 46-23. Onaway led 16-2 after one period, 24-7 at the half, and 36-12 through three. Szymoniak scored 22 points, Galer had 14, and Badgero had eight.

The Cardinal girls, scheduled to travel to Joburg on Wednesday, will travel to Central Lake on Tuesday and host Gaylord St. Mary next Thursday.
