Cardinal girls see winning streak come to an end with loss at J-L

The Onaway High School varsity girls’ basketball team saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end last Wednesday at undefeated Johannesburg-Lewiston, 70-27.

The loss – the second for Onaway against J-L this season – dropped the Cardinals’ record to 9-3 (6-3 Ski Valley Conference). The only other team to beat OHS this season is Gaylord St. Mary, whom the Cards hosted yesterday (Thursday).

Joburg ran out to a 19-4 lead after one period and never looked back, stretching that to 39-14 at the half, and 53-22 through three quarters. Erika Price led Onaway with seven points.

Earlier in the evening, the OHS JV saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end with a 42-34 loss to Joburg. The Cards led 8-6 after one, but trailed 18-16 at the half, and 30-22 through three. Jade Galer had 13 points and Lexi Szymoniak had eight.

The girls’ basketball teams are scheduled to host Mancelona on Tuesday and travel to Inland Lakes next Thursday.
