OHS girls continue to roll with wins over Forest Area, Pellston

The Onaway High School varsity girls’ basketball team improved to 7-2 (5-2 Ski Valley Conference) with a convincing 65-41 win Wednesday at Forest Area. The win was the sixth straight for the Cardinals. Onaway led 20-7 after one period and 37-25 at the half. The Cards outscored the Warriors 23-5 in period three to take a commanding 60-30 lead into the final stanza.

“We thought the score at halftime was closer than it should have been,” said OHS coach Marty Mix. “We had a heart-to-heart at the half, and came out in the third and played to our potential.”

Kallie Shimel paced the Cardinals offensively with 19 points. Mariah Ehrke had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Emily Estep just missed one with 13 points and nine steals.

Earlier in the evening, the OHS junior varsity won its sixth straight, improving to 6-3, with a 63-15 win over Forest Area. Onaway led 20-2 after one period, 33-7 at the half, and 48-9 through three quarters. Jade Galer paced the Cards offensively with 18 points. Lexi Szymoniak and Morganne Badgero scored 14 points apiece, while Elise Arkwood scored nine points.

Last Friday, the varsity Red Birds defeated visiting Pellston, 64-35. Onaway led 23-8 after one period, 41-17 at the half, and 51-27 through three frames. Ehrke had 21 points and 10 rebounds, Shimel had 13 points, and Devin Brisley had eight.

The JV also won its game with the Hornets, 42-28. Onaway led 14-2 after one quarter, 16-10 at the half, and 30-18 through three periods. Arkwood scored 12 points, while Galer, Szymoniak, and Badgero all had 10. The girls’ basketball teams are scheduled to host Bellaire tonight (Friday), host Wolverine on Monday, and travel to Joburg on Wednesday.
