RC wrestlers third at Bill Barrett Memorial

The shorthanded Rogers City wrestling team took third at the annual Bill Barrett Memorial Super Duals Saturday finishing 3-2 on the day.  Rogers City defeated Cheboygan 60-12 and Alpena 51-27 before falling to Gaylord 51-24. They then defeated St. Ignace 45-34 and fell to Manistee 39-36. Gaylord was 5-0 on the day to finish first and Manistee finished 4-1.

Four Hurons went undefeated on the day. Senior Evan Lamb was 5-0 at 135/140 to earn the most valuable lower weight wrestler award. Freshman Justin Saile was 5-0 at 103/112, sophomore Cameron Urban was undefeated at 125 and sophomore Jacob Sobeck was undefeated at 130.

Against Cheboygan the Hurons won by void at 112, 125, 135, 145, 152 and 103. Sobeck, Lamb, Caleb Pommerenke and Jack Ryan all won by pin. Using wins by void at 130, 152, 103 and 112 as well as pins by Urban, Lamb and Pommerenke and a 12-4 win by Ryan the Hurons handled Alpena.

Against Gaylord Urban, Austin Bober and Sobeck won by pin while Lamb and Saile both won by decision. Sobeck and Ryan each won by pin over St. Ignace, Lamb won by decision and the Hurons took voids at 140, 145, 215, 103 and 125.

Winners against Manistee were Lamb, Ryan, Pommerenke and Urban who all won by pin while Saile and Sobeck won by void.

Going 4-1 on the day were Pommerenke and Ryan. Grant Popour and Bober were each 3-2 on the day. Blake Fessler was 2-3 and Tommy Vogelheim took two voids at 103 pounds. The Hurons were without Jared LaFleche and Sage Sawyer for the meet.

Rogers City travels to the Roscommon Duals Saturday and will host their final regular season home match Wednesday at 6 p.m.

GOING 4-1 on Saturday at the Bill Barrett Memorial Super Duals was junior Jack Ryan. Ryan won three matches by pin and one by decision while losing to a very good wrestler from Gaylord. Above he works the half nelson over on his opponent from St. Ignace whom he pinned in 2:50. (Photo by Angie Asam)
