A hustling Huron defense and cold shooting by the Lady Cardinals ended Onaway’s season in the district semifinal game. Set on facing undefeated Posen in the district finals, the Cardinals plans ended with a 41-36 loss to Rogers City.

The Hurons, winners of only two games (both against Hillman) all year and without a district tournament win since 2010, broke out of their usual zone defense and played an aggressive man-to-man which created many opportunities.

The Cards came in as the favorite to top coach Dave O’Bryant’s (6-57 in three seasons) squad, but struggled to find their groove.

Huron Courtney Streich battles Cardinals Megan Estep, Kallie Shimel and Temara Lupu for a rebound.

Emily Estep led the team with nine points while Lupu and LeCureux had seven each. Erhke scored six, Megan Estep had five and Shimel scored one to round out the scoring for Onaway.

For Rogers City, Streich scored 17 to lead all scorers while Rebecca Meredith added seven.

Posen scored the first 11 points, using a fast-paced offense and tough three-quarter court pressing to get out in front early. All-state center Korynn Hincka scored 17 of her game-high 36 points in the first quarter.

Anna Couture had 15 and controlled the pace of the game from her point-guard position.

The winner of Friday’s game advances to the Gaylord regional for a Tuesday contest with the winner of the Pellston district.
