Season on the line Saturday as Cardinals compete in district tourney

Members of the Onaway High School wrestling team will put their seasons on the line Saturday when they compete at an individual district tournament at Ishpeming.

Wrestlers who finish in the top four in a weight division at the district tournament advance to regionals the following weekend. Those who don’t finish in the top four see their season come to an end.

Last Saturday, six Cardinals competed in the Straits Area Conference meet at Rudyard. Despite fielding such a small squad, Onaway finished fourth among the eight schools in attendance.

Isaac Nave led the way, earning a conference championship at 103 pounds. Nave defeated Tom Merchberger of Sault Ste. Marie by 15-0 technical fall and pinned Justin Saile of Rogers City in 1:06 to improve to 28-10.

Joe Traynham split a pair of matches and finished second at 112 pounds. Traynham (28-4) pinned David Mommenry of Rudyard in 1:03 but was pinned by Bill Bentgen of St. Ignace in 5:07.

Morgan Robins split a pair of matches and took second at 140 pounds. Robins (21-8) pinned Harley Faust of Mio in 3:56 but was pinned by Evan Lamb of Rogers City in 2:48.

Casey Watson split a pair of matches and took third at 189 pounds. Watson (20-10) was pinned by Austin Brown of the Soo in 3:12 before pinning Caleb Compton of Cheboygan in 1:50.

unds. Ramos was pinned by Steven Livermore of Newberry in 1:04 before pinning Corey Schaedig of Rogers City in 1:56.

Justin Gedda split four matches and took fourth at 160 pounds. Gedda (22-17) pinned Jarrett Brow of Newberry and Blake Fessler of Rogers City, but was pinned by Joe Krause of St. Ignace and Chris Freeborn of the Soo.

St. Ignace won the meet with 166.5 points. Sault Ste Marie was next with 151.5 points, followed by Rogers City (144), Onaway (80.5), Rudyard (80), Mio (79), Newberry (54), and Cheboygan (27).

The Cardinals were scheduled to compete in the team district tournament yesterday (Thursday) at OHS.
