Chamber announces person and business of the year

The Onaway Area Chamber of Commerce is putting plans in place for 2013.

At the chamber’s last meeting, the board voted on the business of the year, person of the year and nominated a grand marshal.

School resource officer/deputy Lewis Robinson Sr. was selected as the person of the year for his dedication to Onaway Area Community Schools and the students he mentors and coaches.

Principal/athletic director Marty Mix was nominated as this year’s grand marshal for all the time, dedication and support he devotes to the students of the district.

Members of the community can submit a nominee for grand marshal  from now until the chamber dinner in April when the final decision will be made.

According to chamber president Connie Gibson, a lot of focus is being put on the school system this year.

Moran Iron Works has been voted business of the year.

“Tom Moran has devoted so much to this community, such as employment, donations, dedication and more, to try and bring more jobs into our small community. ” said Gibson. “With all of Tom’s upcoming plans and commitment, this should bring an economic growth to our town and surrounding area.”

Robinson and Moran will be honored at the chamber dinner, planned for April 25 at St. Paul Hall.

“We had so many wonderful and positive comments last year that we decided to keep a few things the same,” said Gibson. The Band Remedee will provide music and Woodwinds Restaurant will cater the affair.

“A couple things that have changed that we believe the public will be in favor of, one is the price of the tickets. They have been reduced from $25 apiece to $15 apiece,” said Gibson. “This will include a delicious meal, beverages, music, plus a few added extras, and all the fun you can stand.”

There also will be a silent auction. The public is invited to attend.

Gibson thanked chamber members for renewing for their memberships, because it makes it possible for the organization to move forward with their 2013 plans.

“People may not realize that this organization survives and continues to exist because of the memberships,” said Gibson. “If successful, and we get support from the community, money is made from one event, and that goes into planning other

events, and so on.”

Chamber board members include: Rosalie Rose, vice president; Bryan Madison, treasurer; Marcia Pauly, secretary; Jim Gibson, bylaws.

Kamron Oberlin is the newest board director and joins Dawn Thompson, Judy Shaloy and Ryan Howell.

“We are always looking and hoping for more volunteers. Anyone interested in giving a few hours of your time to help plan and work on any upcoming chamber events would be very much appreciated.”

Gibson also said Jackie Fry has taken over as office manager. “She knows the ins and outs of that office and the daily routine perfectly.”

The chamber has posted a calendar of events on its website and will be updating any other upcoming events as soon as they have confirmed dates. The next chamber meeting is March 21 at 7 p.m.
