A record setting regular-season and dominating playoff performances earned Posen junior Korynn Hincka several all-state awards.
Hincka was one of 10 Class D Associated Press first-team all-state players, but since the close of the girls’ basketball season she has been named first-team all-state by the Detroit News and the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM). The Detroit Free Press will release its list of top players tomorrow.
Hincka, who played center for the Vikings, led her team to the program’s first 20-win regular-season and became the school’s all-time scoring leader. She surpassed her cousin Jordan Hincka late in the regular season and still has her senior season to go. She has 1,687 points and could become one of the state’s top five scorers for all classes.
“Obviously, she had a monster season,” said Posen head coach Karl Momrik. “With her size and athletic ability, she has the whole package. That is why so many colleges are looking at her.” She is still deciding on which one to go to and has been offered full scholarships to several.
“After her performance against St. Ignace, more are joining in,” said Momrik.
Posen’s season came to an end in the Class D regional final against St. Ignace, the eventual state champ.
The head coaches from Ferris State University and Grand Valley State University were at the regional final, as well as representatives from Northern Michigan University and Lake Superior State University. She had 645 points in 22 games, missing two to injury (29.3 per game), 62 assists, 319 rebounds, 81 steals and shot 70 percent from the free throw-line.
Senior point guard Anna Couture, who finished second on the Michigan High School Athletic Association with 680 assists, was named first-team all-conference. She scored 229 (9.5 per game) points, 208 assists (8.7 per game), 98 rebounds and 84 steals.
“As far as playing defense, handling the ball and the assists, it does not get any better than Anna,” said Momrik.
In terms of assists, she more than likely would rank in the top 10 in assists in Class D this season, Momrik said.
“To have 200 assists in a season is just incredible,” said Momrik.
Junior Ashley Meyers (191 points, 78 assists, 156 rebounds, 82 steals) was a second-team all-conference selection, while freshman Jenna Hincka (138 points, 111 steals) and junior Bev Bednarski (239 points, 85 steals) were North Star League honorable mentions
