Posen boys move to district finals

The Posen Vikings (9-12) are playing their best basketball when it matters the most. They won two in a row at the end of the regular season and played extremely well the last quarter of the season. The Vikings rode that wave into the Class D district semifinal at Rogers City and defeated Onaway, 72-67.

Martin Mulka had a career-high 25 points and Nick Hincka kept his steady scoring going with an additional 25. The Cardinals (11-10), who defeated Rogers City Monday night, were led by Carlos Bautista’s 20.

Coach Steve Hentkowski told his squad it would be for the county championship, and they responded with a gritty effort. It was a physical game from start-to-finish.

Posen took a 25-10 lead early in the second quarter, but Onaway got it down to seven at the half, 32-25.

The Cards kept chipping away, and got within four with less than two minutes, but the Vikings were able to maintain a lead they had since the very beginning of the game and win. While both teams had players in foul trouble, Onaway had two starters foul out in the fourth quarter.

Posen will play the winner of the Atlanta vs. Hillman game that was being played Wednesday night in the other semifinal. The district final is Friday at 7 p.m.

Other scorers for Posen included: Travis Sharpe 8; Brandon Dietz 7; and Lucas Litwinski 5. For Onaway: Joe O’Bradovitch 17; Rasheed Porter 9; Andrew Perry 8.
