An undefeated Posen girls’ basketball team was tested early in Friday’s Class D district final at Onaway.

An inspired Rogers City squad, who had pulled off the win of their season two nights before by eliminating Onaway, outplayed the Vikings in the first eight minutes.

Posen (22-0) was clearly out of synch, while Rogers City was led by Courtney Streich’s outside shooting. She had six of her team-leading 10 in the first quarter. Logan Fleming’s 3-pointer gave the Hurons an 8-3 advantage.

Korynn Hincka got some hard fought points to keep the score close early. Four points were off rebound put-backs. On one play late in the quarter, she rebounded the ball three times before getting a shot to fall. The Hurons stayed on top 14-13 heading into the second, but stayed at 14 the rest of the half.

Posen played better defense and created numerous turnovers, while the Hurons just could not get some easy shots to fall.

In the meantime, Hincka started piling up the points. She had 13 of her game-high 26 before halftime. The score at the break was 32-14. The Vikings never relinquished the momentum and won the third quarter 14-5. The final score was 58-31.

It’s Posen fourth consecutive district title.

“Rogers City got off to a gre

at start, and I think it is a great character builder for our team,” said Posen coach Karl Momrik. “We don’t like seeing some of the things that we saw, and we cannot have any more starts like that in the tournament.” Bev Bednarski finished with 14 for the Vikes.

“We had a great game plan and executed it in the first quarter, but fell part in the second,” said Huron coach David O’Bryant. Rogers City finished 3-19.

Momrik said his squad would enjoy the win through the weekend and then get refocused for Tuesday’s regional semifinal at Gaylord. They play Pellston at 8 p.m.
