Cardinal wraps up track regular season at SVC championships

The Onaway High School track and field team wrapped up its regular season last week at the Ski Valley Conference championships at Mancelona. The Cardinal boys and girls both finished fifth among the nine SVC schools.

Athletes finishing first in an event earned all-SVC first-team honors, with second-team honors earned by those finishing second, and honorable mentions earned by those taking third. Medals were earned through fourth place.

Senior Emily Estep, in the final track meet of her career, won SVC championships in both the 100-meter dash (in 13.1 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (in 28.2 seconds).

Estep also teamed with fellow seniors Ashley LeCureux and Kallie Shimel, and Elise Arkwood, to win the 800-meter relay (1:59.9). That same foursome finished fourth in the 400-meter relay. Madison Nash took second in the discus.

Joe O’Bradovich and Joe Traynham both earned SVC championships for the OHS boys, with O’Bradovich winning the high jump with a leap of 5’8”, and Traynham winning the 3,200-meter run in 10:36.

O’Bradovich, Traynham, Noah Bacon, and Rich Hoff took second in the 3,200-meter relay, while Bacon, Hoff, Jason Sigsby, and Joe Sigsby finished second in the 800-meter relay.

O’Bradovich, Bacon, Hoff, and Jason Sigsby were third in the 1,600-meter relay and fourth in the 400-meter relay. Traynham also was fourth in the 1,600-meter run.

Bellaire won the girls’ meet, while Mancelona emerged victorious in the boys’ competition.

The season now is over for all but O’Bradovich, who will compete Saturday in the high jump at the Division 4 state finals in Hudsonville.

Estep (100-meter dash) and Sam Brasseur (shot put) also earned the right to compete at the state meet, but both will be participating Saturday in the district softball tournament instead.
