With many games canceled, including a home doubleheader Tuesday against Sault Ste. Marie, the Rogers City Huron softball team was happy to get some games in last week.
The Hurons were at the Hillman Invitational Saturday, under very nice weather conditions, where they were 1-1 on the day.
Rogers City started the day taking on Marquette. The game was scoreless until the fourth when Marquette put up five runs. Rogers City answered with two runs in the fifth but the Redettes added to their lead with two more in the sixth to take a 7-2 lead. The Hurons pushed one across in the seventh to make the final score 7-3.
Senior Brooklyn Idalski took the loss on the mound allowing five runs on six hits with one strikeout and one walk in four innings of work. Junior Nikki Radke came on in relief allowing two runs on two hits and two walks in two innings of work.
Junior Courtney Streich led the offense with two hits including a double. Sophomore Logan Fleming belted the first home run of her high school career as well. Senior Rebecca Meredith had two hits while junior Cassie Brege, sophomore Alexa Quaine and freshman Sarah Meredith each had a hit.
Rogers City then squared off against Alcona in the consolation game winning 14-4 to place third. Marquette went on to fall to Hillman.
Quaine went all five innings for the Hurons on the mound giving up four runs on six hits while striking out five and walking one.
Aided by many walks and errors the Hurons had only four hits. Fleming didn’t waste time launching the second home run of her career for one of the hits. Brooklyn Idalski and Sarah Meredith each had a double in the game while Brege added a hit. Streich was walked twice and hit by a pitch twice and scored four runs in the win.
