OHS baseball team eyes district and conference championships

The Onaway High School baseball team, which improved to 17-6 Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Pellston, will be looking to win both district and conference championships within the next four days.

The Cardinals will participate Saturday in the district tournament at Rogers City. Onaway will play the host Hurons in a semifinal at 10 a.m., with Inland lakes and Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian playing in a semi at noon.

The winners of those games will play in the district championship at 2 p.m. Onaway split a regular season doubleheader with Rogers City, and swept regular season twinbills from both Inland Lakes and BLNMC.

Win or lose in the districts, OHS will resume game two of a doubleheader against Joburg on Tuesday at Maxon Field. The Cards trailed by a run in the fourth inning when the game was called due to rain.

If Onaway is able to come back and win that contest, it will clinch at least a share of the Ski Valley Conference title. The Cardinals are 13-2 in the SVC and 17-6 overall.

On Wednesday, the Cards swept Pellston, winning 4-3 and 14-7, to keep their conference title hopes alive. Cody Whitsitt scored on a sacrifice bunt by Ray Self in the bottom of the sixth to win the opener.

Andrew Prow allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits in five innings, walking one and fanning three. Chae Whitsitt recorded the final three outs and got the win.

Onaway made five errors and had six hits, with Andrew Prow going 3-for-3 with four stolen bases and a RBI.

OHS blew open a close game in the nightcap with a six-run fourth inning. Matt Tollini allowed seven runs, only two earned, on five hits, walking five and fanning five in six innings.

The Cardinals overcame six errors with 15 hits. Prow and Justin Gedda both went 3-for-4, Chae Whitsitt was 2-for-3, and Tollini and Tommy Auger both went 2-for-4.

Last Friday, the Red Birds swept a doubleheader from visiting Inland Lakes, winning the opener, 4-3, and the nightcap, 10-6. Both contests were tight throughout.

Five Cardinal errors allowed the Bulldogs to score their runs. Onaway had five hits, led by Tollini, who went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. Andrew Perry reached base three times, stole three bases, and scored two runs.

Game two was tied at six before OHS scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Tollini got the win, allowing six runs, two earned, on four hits, walking eight and fanning seven.

Onaway made four errors and had five hits to go along with nine walks. Chae Whitsitt was 2-for-2 and scored two runs. Tyler Welklin and Self also scored two runs.
