Softball team pushes winning streak to five with blowout wins

The Onaway High School softball team put a season-opening loss squarely in the rearview mirror this week with doubleheader sweeps Monday against Joburg and last Thursday at Forest Area.

The Cardinals blanked J-L in the home opener, 9-0 and 7-0, behind the pitching of Emily Estep, stellar defense, and the hitting of Emily Estep and Morganne Badgero.

Emily Estep allowed five hits, walked one, and struck out 13 in game one. Onaway made no errors, recorded 10 hits, and took advantage of nine walks issued by Joburg.

Badgero had a huge game, going 4-for-4 with a double, four RBI, and two runs scored. Emily Estep went 2-for-2 with two RBI and three runs scored, Temara Lupu had two RBI, and Erika Price scored three runs.

Onaway scored a run in the first inning, two in the third, three in the fourth, and three in the fifth in the victory. In game two, the Cards exploded for five runs in the third, and coasted.

Emily Estep allowed three hits and one walk, fanning eight, in six innings. OHS made one error and recorded six hits. Emily Estep went 2-for-2 with a double and a home run, while Badgero had a double and drove in two runs.

Last Thursday’s games at Forest Area were no closer, as the Cardinals defeated the Warriors, 18-2 in four innings and 16-0 in three. Onaway needed only nine hits to record the sweep, taking advantage of 27 walks issued by FA pitchers.

In the opener, OHS scored five runs in the first, seven in the second, one in the third, and five in the fourth. Emily Estep allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits, fanning six in four innings of work.

Sam Brasseur doubled, Badgero had three RBI, and Lupu, Megan Estep, and Ashley LaLonde scored three runs apiece. Emily Estep stole three bases.

The defense, which made one error in the opener, made another in the nightcap. Olivia McDonald tripled and had three RBI. Megan Estep also tripled, Badgero doubled and had two RBI, and LaLonde scored three runs.

The softball team was scheduled to host Rogers City yesterday (Thursday), will compete in a tournament at Birch Run on Saturday, will host Posen on Tuesday, and will travel to Bellaire next Thursday.
